WASHINGTON — Former District of Columbia Mayor and Council member Marion Barry was sent to the hospital late Saturday night after a crash.
Barry’s spokeswoman LaToya Foster told WTOP early Sunday morning that Barry, who is diabetic, had been suffering from a hypoglycemic attack, which means his blood sugar was dangerously low, and was disoriented when he collided with another car.
District police confirmed he was involved in a minor accident at the 2800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE at 30th Street. Police also said it was an accident that involved a car driving the wrong way down a one way street when it collided with another vehicle.
The Washington Post reports a law enforcement source said Barry was cited by police for allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road and driving with expired tags.
They would not confirm at this time which car the former mayor was in, or whether he was driving. Furthermore, there was no information about the other car as of early Sunday morning.
Barry tweeted from the hospital about 11:45 p.m. that he “fine” and described the wreck he’d been in as a “fender bender.”
Sources told Fox 5 News that Barry, 78, was indeed driving and was spotted driving the wrong way on Pennsylvania Avenue when the crash occurred.
Barry himself was tweeting from Howard University Hospital by 11:45 p.m., saying he was “fine,” that the crash was a “minor fender bender.”
